Luke Schwartz – Dream Path No. 2 (guitar/electronics)

Dream Path No. 2 is the second in a series of pieces that deals with the mixing of various sounds that we experience in the world. Whether we choose to consciously experience these mediums or not, our ears receive music that may be tonal, atonal, pure sound, etc., and those experiences are stored by our musical intuition. In a dream, these sounds may come out, but in ways that are unprecedented. Bits and pieces of different things we've heard at some point in our lives are connected in new ways. In a dream, we often start somewhere, and moving through the dream we find it hard to understand how we ended up where the dream "finishes". The Dream Path series mirrors this experience. Furthermore, there is a second layer of dream metaphor built into the performance practice of these pieces. In a dream, we often have a conscious revelation that we are dreaming. When this happens, the dreamer may choose to control or manipulate things in the dream. These are also referred to as lucid dreams. This experience is mirrored in the Dream Path series by moments of "improvisational freedom" that are structured into the form. The player may be asked to interpret graphics, text, or other alternative notations to break out of the traditional determinate performance of notated music, just as our consciousness within a dream allows us to break out of an involuntary state and move into a lucid one.
